Guardiola Confident Donnarumma Will Learn to Avoid Cautions
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed confidence in goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after the player received his fourth yellow card during Saturday’s match against Leeds United. This caution leaves Donnarumma just one booking away from a suspension, raising concerns about his disciplinary record early in his City career. Guardiola emphasized that he believes the 26-year-old is mature enough to learn from these experiences without needing direct intervention.
Guardiola noted, “He is adult enough. He will, step by step, understand things in the league and [learn] new behaviours.” Three of Donnarumma’s cautions have been for dissent, indicating a need for adjustment as he adapts to the demands of English football.
The match at the Etihad Stadium saw Leeds come back from a two-goal deficit to level the score before City secured a victory with a stoppage-time goal from Donnarumma, marking his second strike of the afternoon. Controversy surrounded the encounter when Leeds manager Daniel Farke accused Donnarumma of feigning injury, allowing Guardiola time to deliver a crucial team talk. This incident further highlights the scrutiny Donnarumma faces in his new environment.
During a press conference on Monday, Guardiola appeared reluctant to elaborate on Donnarumma’s situation, stating he had “a lot” of concerns but keeping his comments brief. The media session, particularly for broadcast reporters, lasted only slightly over two minutes. Guardiola shifted focus when discussing Phil Foden, the academy graduate whose contract extends until 2027. He expressed hope that Foden would commit to Manchester City for the long term, saying, “Hopefully he can stay all his career here.”
Foden, 25, recently declared himself one of the team’s leaders following his standout performance against Leeds. Guardiola acknowledged Foden’s on-pitch presence, remarking, “On the pitch, he’s always been like that.” Despite his quieter demeanor in the dressing room, Foden’s leadership qualities shine through during matches.
Guardiola also addressed the availability of midfielder Rodri, who has struggled with injuries. The 29-year-old has only appeared for one minute in City’s last ten games due to a hamstring issue and has been ruled out of the upcoming match against Fulham at Craven Cottage. When asked about Rodri’s potential return, Guardiola stated, “No, not yet,” leaving uncertainty surrounding the player’s fitness for future fixtures.
As Manchester City prepares for their next challenge, Guardiola’s confidence in his squad’s ability to adapt and grow will be vital. The manager’s insights into both Donnarumma’s and Foden’s situations illustrate a delicate balance between nurturing talent and managing the pressures of top-flight football.
