Tragic Passing of Young Mum Leaves Devon Family Heartbroken

A family in Devon is grappling with profound loss following the sudden death of a young mother, Charlie Comer, who tragically passed away in her sleep at the age of 22. Charlie was 20 weeks pregnant and eagerly awaiting the arrival of her second child, whom she had chosen to name Arlo. Her mother, Carrie Burns, confirmed the heartbreaking news, emphasizing that Charlie was in good health and appeared to be thriving.

Carrie described her daughter as “flourishing” and excited about the new addition to their family. “She had her issues in the past but had turned her life around,” Carrie stated. “Charlie was getting help for her mental health and was really positive about the future.” However, the joy of anticipation was shattered on Monday, October 13, 2023, when Charlie went to bed feeling unwell and did not wake up the next morning.

The family is now in a state of disbelief as they await answers regarding the cause of Charlie’s unexpected death. Carrie revealed, “They couldn’t find any cause in the post-mortem, so we’re waiting while they run tests. We don’t know when the inquest will be.” Despite Charlie experiencing morning sickness during her pregnancy, the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.

Survived by her 18-month-old daughter Remi, Charlie’s passing has left a significant impact on the young child, who currently lives with her father. “Remi is too young to understand what has happened,” Carrie noted. “We try to ensure she knows who her mum is and that she loved her so much.” The family sees Remi a few times a week, cherishing the moments they have together.

Following Charlie’s death, a post-mortem examination was conducted to determine the cause of her passing. Tragically, baby Arlo also died, and Carrie emphasized the family’s wish to keep him with his mother. “We requested that the baby stay with her,” she explained. “They sent her to Southampton for a specialist post-mortem to ensure the baby was kept in Charlie.” Carrie recalled how she had accompanied Charlie to a gender scan, where they learned they were expecting a boy.

The emotional toll of losing both Charlie and her unborn child has been immense for the family. Carrie expressed her anguish over the lack of answers, stating, “It’s a real struggle not knowing what’s caused it and why this has happened. If we could make some sense of it, even though there’s no sense in a 20-year-old dying, it would help us process it.”

Charlie was known for her vibrant personality and her ability to make others happy. “She made a huge impact on everyone she met,” Carrie reflected. “It’s heartbreaking to lose her and baby Arlo.” In the wake of this tragedy, Carrie is now raising funds to cover the expenses for Charlie’s funeral.
