Dublin’s David Walsh Secures €1 Million in SaaStock Europe Pitch
Dublin entrepreneur David Walsh achieved a remarkable milestone by winning up to €1 million for his startup, Limelight, during the SaaStock Europe Global Pitch Competition. This event took place in October in Walsh’s hometown, where he showcased his innovative business model on a prestigious stage, drawing attention from a diverse audience of industry leaders and investors.
The SaaStock Europe Global Pitch Competition is a high-stakes event designed to spotlight rising talent in the Software as a Service (SaaS) and artificial intelligence sectors. This year, the competition attracted over 4,500 attendees, including 600 investors and more than 90 global speakers. Leading venture capital firms such as Octopus Ventures and Antler were among those in attendance, eager to discover the next big idea in the tech landscape.
Walsh, a seasoned entrepreneur who has founded multiple businesses, was motivated by a spontaneous decision to enter the competition. After what he described as “a few too many beers,” he submitted his application without any expectations. Despite the last-minute entry, he found himself progressing through rounds of presentations, ultimately securing a spot among the final five competitors. “The vibe was great, there was a lot of energy,” he remarked about the experience.
Limelight operates as a B2B influencer marketplace, aiming to connect brands with relevant business-focused influencers. This approach emphasizes quality over quantity, starting their collaborations with creators who have at least 10,000 LinkedIn followers. Walsh explained that in the B2B environment, having a smaller yet more engaged audience can be more valuable when promoting high-ticket items that may cost tens of thousands of dollars.
In a market where traditional advertising is losing effectiveness, Limelight addresses a critical challenge faced by brands. Walsh noted, “Marketing leaders are struggling to get a good return on their paid ad spend. It’s becoming more saturated.” By leveraging the trust that influencers have built with their audiences, Limelight presents a compelling alternative to conventional advertising methods. Walsh emphasized that their service is significantly more affordable, stating they are “twenty times cheaper than an agency” and do not charge transaction fees.
Winning the pitch competition has positioned Limelight for accelerated growth. The startup has already attracted clients such as ZoomInfo, HubSpot, and Webflow. Following the competition, Walsh secured an additional €2 million in funding from Silicon Valley Angels, which will allow Limelight to expand its team and enhance its offerings while maintaining a lean operational structure.
Reflecting on his unexpected success, Walsh shared a valuable lesson: “The biggest moments in your life rarely come from a master plan. They come from small acts of courage.” His journey illustrates that while the decision to apply may have been impulsive, the extensive preparation he undertook in developing his pitch deck played a crucial role in his triumph.
As Limelight continues to evolve, Walsh remains committed to focusing on high-quality, measurable influencer marketing. His vision is to shift the paradigm of influencer marketing from mere awareness to impactful growth for brands. With a strong foundation and a clear strategy, Limelight is poised to make a significant mark in the industry.
Walsh’s story, from a spontaneous pitch submission to securing a substantial investment, serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs. “Sometimes, the biggest risk isn’t failing; it’s not putting yourself out there,” he concluded, exemplifying the spirit of innovation and resilience that defines successful founders.
