Wout Weghorst’s Disallowed Goal Celebration Sparks Controversy
Former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst found himself at the centre of an awkward moment during a recent match between Ajax and Utrecht. Weghorst scored a goal in the final minutes of the first half, but the celebration quickly turned sour when a video surfaced of a Utrecht physiotherapist mocking his reaction after the goal was disallowed.
The incident unfolded as Weghorst received a well-placed pass from Oscar Gloukh at the far post. He confidently finished the opportunity, flexing his muscles in celebration. Moments later, however, the joy was extinguished following a VAR review that ruled out the goal due to a foul by Lucas Rosa on teammate Gijval Zechiel.
As if the disallowed goal was not humiliating enough, the physiotherapist’s mocking imitation of Weghorst’s celebration was captured on camera, drawing attention on social media.
Ajax ultimately lost the match 2-1, marking the first game for interim manager Fred Grim after the recent sacking of John Heitinga. Despite the defeat, Ajax remains in fourth place in the Eredivisie, trailing third-place AZ by four points and sitting eight points behind league leaders Feyenoord.
Weghorst joined Ajax last summer, returning to the Netherlands after a two-year stint at Burnley. Since arriving, he has made 45 appearances for Ajax and scored 18 goals. Before his time at Ajax, he had a brief loan spell at Manchester United in 2023. Although he showed enthusiasm during his time at Old Trafford, his contributions fell short of expectations; he made just 31 appearances and described his experience as a “dream come true.”
Reflecting on his time at Manchester United, Weghorst expressed gratitude to the fans in a video compilation, stating, “Dear Man United fans, thanks for everything. I really enjoyed every single second at this club, from winning silverware to scoring my first goal against Betis at Old Trafford. Dreams came true. Unbelievably proud to wear the badge.”
As Ajax looks to regain momentum in the league, the spotlight remains on Weghorst as he continues to play a pivotal role in the team’s aspirations.
