The charity, Curious Critters, reported discovering five deceased swans that exhibited a distinctive symptom: a change in eye color to blue. This unusual alteration is attributed to the virus affecting the cells lining the cornea, according to BristolLive.

The situation arose on November 9, 2023, when the charity was alerted to the presence of the swans. Following coordination with Bath Swan Rescue and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the collection of the deceased swans was carried out on November 10. This swift action aimed to protect other wildlife and prevent further spread of the virus.

In a statement posted on Facebook, a spokesperson for Curious Critters expressed confidence that the incident represented an outbreak of Avian Influenza. “Multiple swans displayed a very unique symptom of the virus, and we urge the community to adhere to the guidelines provided in our post,” the spokesperson said.

The charity emphasized the importance of retrieving the deceased swans to safeguard the remaining wildlife in the area. The spokesperson also acknowledged the support of Bath Swan Rescue, stating, “They provided invaluable advice, equipment, and helped coordinate this whole mission.”
