Starmer Backs Chief of Staff Amid Growing Calls for Resignation
Keir Starmer has reaffirmed his support for his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, despite increasing pressure for his resignation following controversial briefings that disparaged Labour MPs. The Prime Minister’s decision to maintain McSweeney’s position comes after allegations that he orchestrated damaging leaks against fellow party members, particularly targeting Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary.
The controversy erupted when reports surfaced describing Labour MPs as “feral,” leading to a public backlash and calls for accountability within Starmer’s administration. Downing Street has defended the Prime Minister’s choice not to pursue an investigation, stating that senior staff assured him they were not involved in the briefings. A spokesperson emphasized that Starmer trusts their word, dismissing claims of a “whitewash” as unfounded.
Despite Starmer’s confidence in his chief of staff, prominent Labour figures are urging a reevaluation of McSweeney’s role. Former Labour Cabinet minister Lord Blunkett suggested it might be time for Starmer to consider a different position for McSweeney, who played a significant role in the party’s election success last year. A source within Labour indicated that contingency plans for McSweeney’s departure are being considered, which could include a transition to a senior role within the party to mitigate fallout.
The tension surrounding this situation intensified as Anna Turley, the Labour Party chairman, and Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that Starmer has initiated an inquiry to identify the source of the damaging briefings. Nevertheless, Downing Street has since denied the need for a formal investigation, asserting that the Prime Minister is satisfied with the reassurances he has received. Starmer has publicly distanced himself from the briefings, stating, “I find it absolutely unacceptable.”
During a recent visit to North Wales, where he announced plans for a new nuclear reactor, Starmer reiterated his commitment to ensuring that no such briefings emerge from his office. He has made it clear that any official found guilty of similar actions in the future would face dismissal. This incident has sparked broader concerns about a potential revolt within the Labour ranks, particularly as the party prepares for the upcoming November 26 budget, which is expected to include significant tax increases.
The backdrop of this controversy includes speculation about leadership challenges within the Labour Party. Senior figures such as Streeting, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, and Ed Miliband are perceived as potential contenders for future leadership.
Recent polling data indicates a troubling trend for Starmer, who is currently facing significant unpopularity and criticism for his handling of party dynamics. Following an overwhelming electoral victory less than 18 months ago, his administration now grapples with internal strife and dwindling public support.
As the Labour Party navigates this tumultuous period, the ramifications of these events continue to unfold, raising questions about the future of Starmer’s leadership and the unity of the party. The coming weeks will be crucial as Labour prepares for the budget and addresses the challenges posed by dissenting voices within its ranks.
