A man from South Wales has achieved a remarkable transformation, shedding more than 14.5 stone by adopting a healthier lifestyle and participating in a football-based weight loss program. Alex Williams, 33, once weighed over 30 stone and consumed around 7,000 calories daily, primarily from fast food and takeaways.

Growing up, Alex struggled with his weight, particularly after suffering a career-ending knee injury while playing rugby in his teenage years. This setback led him to seek comfort in food. By the age of 18, he found himself trapped in a cycle of binge eating, frequently indulging in high-calorie meals and spending up to £300 a week on junk food. His diet consisted of family-sized pizzas, sausage rolls, and late-night kebabs, often consumed in secrecy to hide his habits from family and friends.

The turning point in Alex’s journey came following a painful breakup, which prompted him to reevaluate his life choices. A friend encouraged him to join the MAN v FAT program, a weight loss initiative aimed specifically at men. This program helped transform Alex’s approach to weight loss into a team-oriented effort, providing both structure and accountability.

From Excess to Empowerment

With newfound determination, Alex transitioned from unhealthy meals to a diet rich in lean proteins, including steak, salmon, and chicken. After years of dedication, he successfully reduced his weight from 28 stone 2 pounds to 13 stone 9 pounds, losing more than half his body weight. Reflecting on his journey, Alex stated, “I always felt terrible… Mentally, I was struggling. When I decided to lose weight, it was one of these things, like an epiphany moment.”

Alex’s struggles with body image were significant. He felt embarrassed to change in front of others at the rugby club and dreaded holidays that involved swimming pools. As he began to lose weight, he found joy in physical activities again, playing five football matches weekly and training at the gym.

Finding the Right Balance

Among the various strategies Alex adopted, he discovered that frozen grapes were his “ultimate cheat code” for combating sugar cravings. He emphasized the importance of consistency in maintaining his weight loss, noting that while losing weight may not be hard, sustaining that loss requires ongoing effort. “Once you realise that it’s okay to be up one week as long as the trajectory is going down, it gets easier,” he explained.

Currently serving as the Head of People for an AI company, Alex credits the MAN v FAT program for its unique approach to weight loss. He highlighted how the camaraderie within the group provided essential support and encouragement. “The team mentality behind it… makes you think. When you have a rubbish week it doesn’t just affect you anymore; it affects the men on your team too. They hold you accountable.”

Alex’s inspiring story serves as a reminder of the power of community and determination in achieving personal health goals. His experience illustrates that with the right mindset and support, significant change is not only possible but can lead to a fulfilling and active life.
