Walking Trail Launched to Support Men’s Mental Health in Sittingbourne
A new walking trail aimed at encouraging men to discuss their mental health struggles is being developed in Sittingbourne, UK. This initiative, a collaboration between UK Power Networks and Mentalk Health Sittingbourne, focuses on providing a tranquil space for men to engage in open conversations about their mental well-being while enjoying nature.
The project is taking shape at the charity’s nature retreat on the outskirts of Sittingbourne. Volunteers from UK Power Networks have dedicated their time to clearing brambles, edging pathways, and constructing dry hedges along the trail. Research indicates that men are more likely to share their mental health challenges while walking, making this a strategic and impactful approach to fostering dialogue.
The walking trail will include plaques featuring encouraging messages designed to spark conversations and build connections among participants. Jason Firmager, the founder and chief executive of Mentalk Health Sittingbourne, expressed his gratitude towards the volunteers, stating, “The team did an amazing job on the land and it was beautiful to see them bonding while they worked. They showed up with heart, worked hard, and made a real difference.”
Firmager highlighted the increased need for mental health support following the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that many men still experience silent struggles. He emphasized that everyone has different needs when it comes to mental health support, whether it is through walking groups, arts and crafts, talking circles, or fitness activities. “Mental health affects the whole family, including children, so we also involve partners and create the sense of community people have lost. No one should have to face it alone,” he added.
Since its inception, Mentalk Health Sittingbourne has provided crucial support to hundreds of men, helping to prevent suicides and offering a range of services including weekly talking groups, outdoor activities, meals, meditation, outreach, and a confidential 24/7 crisis support system.
The volunteer initiative, known as Donate a Day, allows UK Power Networks employees to take two paid days each year to engage in charitable work. Given that men represent a significant portion of the workforce in the UK power industry, the team aims to raise awareness about men’s mental health and improve access to necessary resources.
Christian Paredes, a volunteer from UK Power Networks’ highway services team, shared his experience, stating, “It was an amazing day. It was fantastic to come together as a team for such a worthwhile cause. Despite the wet weather, everyone gave their best and the results were incredible.” He further noted the rewarding nature of the experience, saying, “We had plenty of laughs along the way, met some great people, and seeing the transformation from start to finish was so rewarding.”
As this walking trail takes shape, it promises to be a significant step towards encouraging open conversations about mental health among men in the community. For more information on the initiative and available resources, visit mentalk-health.org.
