Man Arrested in Belfast for Alleged Smuggling Attempt of Afghan Family
A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Belfast for allegedly attempting to smuggle a family from Afghanistan into Northern Ireland. Ibadullah Alimi appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court following his apprehension at Grand Central Station on December 19, 2023. He reportedly arrived by train from Dublin with four Afghan nationals, including a couple and their two young children.
According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), the family intended to enter the United Kingdom illegally via the Common Travel Area. Alimi, who resides on Alum Rock Road in Birmingham, faces a charge of assisting unlawful immigration. During the court session, an NCA officer stated that she could link him to the alleged offence. Defence solicitor Shane O’Neill confirmed that Alimi understood the charge but did not request bail during the brief hearing.
Details of the Incident
District Judge Steven Keown remanded Alimi in custody while adjourning the case. He is set to appear again on December 19, 2023. Alimi, who had been residing in Dublin, was identified by Home Office Immigration Enforcement officers at the station as a suspected facilitator of illegal immigration.
Investigators indicated that the family had travelled from France to the Republic of Ireland before boarding the train to Belfast. It is believed they intended to continue their journey to England but have since been transferred to immigration authorities.
Response from Authorities
In a statement, NCA Belfast Branch Commander David Cunningham emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating organized immigration crime. He stated, “Tackling organized immigration crime remains a top priority for the NCA, and this investigation is one of around 100 ongoing investigations into networks or individuals in the top tier of this criminality.” Cunningham added that the NCA is collaborating closely with partners to prevent exploitation of the Common Travel Area by those seeking to enter the UK illegally.
The situation highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal immigration routes and the measures being implemented to address them. The NCA’s proactive approach aims to disrupt such activities and uphold the integrity of border security in the United Kingdom.
