Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced that discussions aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Ukraine are “moving in a positive direction.” The remarks came during a virtual meeting with leaders from Ukraine’s allied nations, following constructive talks that took place in Geneva between Ukrainian officials and representatives from the United States over the weekend.

During the meeting held from the Cabinet room at 10 Downing Street, Starmer emphasized the importance of the recent negotiations. He stated, “Progress was made and I welcome some of the developments that have now come forward.” The Prime Minister noted that this was a significant opportunity to ensure that the draft peace plan adequately reflects Ukraine’s interests, aiming to lay the groundwork for a lasting resolution to the conflict.

Starmer highlighted that Ukraine had suggested “constructive changes” to the proposed plan, which have received backing from European national security advisers. He expressed optimism about the talks, saying, “I do think we are moving in a positive direction and indications today that in large part the majority of the text, Volodymyr Zelensky is indicating, can be accepted.”

The Prime Minister’s comments reflect a growing sense of optimism within the coalition of allied nations as they seek to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The collaborative discussions between Ukraine and its allies are seen as crucial steps towards ending the conflict that has persisted for over a year.

As the situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on ensuring that the ceasefire talks incorporate not only the immediate needs of Ukraine but also establish a framework for long-term stability in the region. The coalition’s support underscores a united front among nations committed to restoring peace and security in Ukraine.

The outcome of these discussions will be closely monitored, as the international community remains invested in the prospect of peace in Ukraine.
