Bangor Man Warns of Blindness Risk Due to Ignored Diabetes Symptoms
A man from Bangor, Northern Ireland, is raising awareness about the severe consequences of neglecting diabetes symptoms after experiencing significant vision loss. At the age of 55, Davy Daniel developed permanent sight impairment due to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that damages blood vessels in the retina.
Davy’s journey began with subtle yet alarming signs. “I ignored the symptoms for months,” he shared. “I was very tired, always thirsty, always needing to go to the toilet, and had lost a fair amount of weight.” His wife expressed concern, but it was only when his eyesight deteriorated further that he sought medical attention.
During an eye examination, an optician inquired about his diabetes status and advised him to see his general practitioner. Subsequent tests confirmed that Davy had diabetes and had developed diabetic retinopathy due to prolonged high blood sugar levels. Despite attempts at treatment with laser therapy and injections, the damage was irreversible.
The impact on Davy’s life was profound; he had to leave his job as a machine operator. “I was in the depths of depression,” he recalled. Support from Laura from Sensory Support proved crucial. After encouraging him to engage with others facing similar challenges, Davy found solace in a trip to the Crumlin Road Gaol, organized by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). Meeting others who experienced vision loss helped lift his spirits and foster friendships that continue to this day.
To manage his diabetes more effectively, Davy now uses an implant and scanner to monitor his blood sugar levels. “I think a lot more people have them in general now,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of accessible technology for those with vision impairments.
During Diabetes Awareness Month in November, experts stress the critical need for public awareness regarding diabetes. Gillian Clifford, NHS Engagement Manager at RNIB Northern Ireland, highlighted the importance of regular eye screenings. “Sight loss caused by diabetes is often preventable,” she stated. “Retinopathy can develop without symptoms, and screening detects changes to the retina at an early stage.”
Statistics from Diabetes UK Northern Ireland reveal that nearly 118,000 individuals are currently living with diabetes in the region, a number that continues to rise. This increase correlates with a heightened risk of diabetic retinopathy, which is a leading cause of sight loss among working-age individuals.
Clifford urges eligible individuals to prioritize their health by attending regular screenings. “Screening takes less than half an hour and could save your sight,” she explained.
Additionally, she endorsed Diabetes UK’s “Strike Out Stigma Campaign,” which aims to combat the blame and misconceptions faced by those living with diabetes. “We must all strive for knowledge and understanding to break down stereotypes and improve outcomes,” she asserted.
Davy Daniel’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of recognizing diabetes symptoms and seeking timely medical advice. For those seeking support and information on diabetes management, resources are available at local health services and organizations such as the RNIB.
