A former member of the BBC board, Shumeet Banerji, has publicly criticized the handling of a recent bias crisis within the organization in a resignation letter shared with BBC News. Banerji’s resignation on October 20, 2023, follows the departures of Tim Davie, the corporation’s director general, and Deborah Turness, the CEO of news. In his letter, Banerji stated that Turness had been informed she “did not have the confidence of a majority of the board.” He expressed frustration over not being invited to any meetings where such critical discussions occurred. “I will not be seen as a participant in a board decision on which I was not consulted,” he wrote, highlighting a perceived lack of adequate discussion on important matters.

The controversy traces back to a Panorama episode that controversially edited parts of a speech by former US President Donald Trump. The situation escalated following a leaked memo from former external adviser Michael Prescott, which detailed concerns about the corporation’s governance.
