Shedeur Sanders Impresses in Debut, Coach Awards Game Ball to Myles Garrett
In a significant moment for the Cleveland Browns, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders made his first career start and led the team to a 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite his impressive performance, which included 209 passing yards and one touchdown, the game ball was awarded to star defensive end Myles Garrett, not Sanders.
Coach’s Perspective on Game Ball Decision
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski explained his reasoning during a post-game interview. “Myles got a game ball. I thought he was probably pretty worthy,” said Stefanski. He emphasized the importance of recognizing all players’ contributions, noting that the team’s success was a collective effort. “We spent time pointing out all of our guys and the jobs they did,” he added, highlighting notable plays, including a crucial punt return by Gage Larvadain.
Stefanski acknowledged the significance of Sanders’ debut, particularly as it was the first victory for a quarterback on their initial start for the franchise, ending a streak of 0-17. “Obviously, a rookie starting his first game on the road getting a win is huge,” he stated.
Sanders Secures Starting Position Amid Competition
Following the game, Sanders has secured his position as the starting quarterback for the upcoming match at Huntington Bank Field. This is noteworthy as fellow quarterback Dillon Gabriel has recently been cleared from concussion protocol after suffering an injury against the Baltimore Ravens. Speculation surrounded who would take the starting role upon Gabriel’s return, but the Browns have opted to continue with Sanders, who has already made a significant impact.
Sanders’ performance garnered attention not only from fans but also from notable figures, including former U.S. President Donald Trump. On his social media platform, Trump praised Sanders, stating, “Shedeur Sanders was GREAT. Wins first game, career start, as a pro (for Cleveland). Great Genes. I TOLD YOU SO!” This praise follows a previous outburst from Trump regarding NFL teams overlooking Sanders before the draft.
In the game against the Raiders, Sanders completed 11 of 20 passes, demonstrating his potential as a rising star in the league. As he continues to carve out his legacy with the Browns, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he develops in the coming weeks.
