As temperatures drop and winter approaches, many households face the challenge of mould. While heating systems can dry out homes and reduce mould growth, they are not always running. Instead of relying on expensive treatments, homeowners can adopt a simple and cost-effective method popular in Germany known as “Lüften.” This technique, which translates to “ventilation,” is gaining attention for its effectiveness in keeping homes mould-free.

In Germany, Lüften is a common practice, especially in smaller living spaces such as flats and apartments. The method involves regularly ventilating rooms to allow fresh air to circulate, reducing humidity levels that contribute to mould growth. While Lüften is not widely known in the UK, some experts believe that embracing this technique could yield significant benefits for health and home maintenance.

Dr. Kayode, a Consultant Allergist/Allergy Physician, highlights the importance of preventing mould. She explains, “A home with damp air can suffer from condensation, mould spores, bacteria, and dust mites.” According to her, the presence of mould can exacerbate health issues, including asthma, chronic coughs, and respiratory infections. Common allergens such as Alternaria, Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus thrive in damp environments, making proper ventilation crucial.

Ventilation plays a vital role in maintaining indoor air quality. Dr. Kayode emphasizes that opening windows, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, allows fresh air to enter while expelling excess moisture. This simple act can significantly reduce the proliferation of dust mites and mould spores. However, maintaining open windows throughout the winter can lead to increased heating costs and discomfort.

To maximize ventilation without compromising warmth, the German method of Stoßlüften, or shock ventilation, offers an effective solution. This technique involves opening all windows simultaneously for a short period, typically 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the size of the home. By doing this once a day, homeowners can refresh indoor air without dramatically increasing their heating bills.

For those looking to ventilate a single room, the technique of Querlüften, or cross-ventilation, is an effective alternative. This method involves opening windows on opposite sides of a room, creating a brisk airflow that helps eliminate stale air. Both Stoßlüften and Querlüften are practical strategies that can be easily incorporated into daily routines.

As winter approaches, adopting these German ventilation practices could not only help maintain a comfortable and healthy living environment but also safeguard against the health risks associated with mould exposure. Embracing Lüften could be a simple yet impactful change for many households in the UK and beyond.
