Expert Identifies Coffee Grounds as Major Drain Blockage Culprit
Clogged drains can lead to significant repair expenses, making prevention crucial for homeowners. Recent insights from experts highlight that certain common items, particularly coffee grounds, are major contributors to this issue. According to Spencer Darley from Which? Trusted Trader, coffee grounds do not dissolve in water and can clump together, forming hard blockages in drainage systems.
Understanding the Risks of Coffee Grounds
The problem arises when coffee grounds are disposed of down the sink, even with water. Darley emphasizes, “They don’t dissolve in water, so they can clump together and form a hard, rock-like blockage in the drain.” To avoid complications, he recommends that coffee grounds be thrown in the bin or added to a compost pile, both of which are more environmentally friendly options.
Yet, coffee grounds are not the only offenders when it comes to drain blockages. Homeowners should also be cautious about what they pour down their sinks. Fats, oils, and grease (often referred to as FOG) are particularly problematic. According to data from Which?, water companies clear millions of litres of these substances from sewers annually, illustrating the widespread nature of the issue.
The Scale of the Problem
A notable example comes from water company Severn Trent, which reported clearing the equivalent of six Olympic-sized swimming pools of FOG in just one year. The company also dealt with 28,782 blockages caused by improper disposal of items in toilets and sinks. This figure underscores the importance of educating the public about what can safely be put down drains.
Interestingly, even seemingly harmless items like beer can contribute to drain issues. Regularly pouring large amounts of beer down the sink may lead to unpleasant odours, as the sugars and yeast it contains can create buildup over time.
By adhering to these guidelines and disposing of potentially harmful substances correctly, homeowners can save themselves from the inconvenience and cost of blocked drains. Taking simple steps to prevent blockages not only protects plumbing systems but also promotes better environmental practices.
