Duke of Sussex’s Security Review Initiated Following Legal Setback

The security arrangements for the Duke of Sussex, often known as Harry, while in the United Kingdom are currently under review. This decision follows a formal request made by Harry to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood shortly after her appointment. According to a source close to the duke, he sought a risk assessment from the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) in October.

In a significant development, the Home Office has ordered a threat assessment for Harry for the first time since 2020. This decision comes after he lost an appeal in May challenging the dismissal of his High Court claim against the Home Office. The appeal contested Ravec’s determination that he should receive a different level of taxpayer-funded protection while in the country.

The legal dispute arose after Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, relocated to Canada and then California, announcing their intention to step back from their roles as senior royals. Following the Court of Appeal’s decision, Harry expressed concerns that it has become “impossible” for him to safely bring Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to the UK.

Reassessment Process Underway

In light of these developments, Ravec has instructed its Risk Management Board to reassess Harry’s threat level. Reports indicate that this reassessment process is already underway, with a decision anticipated next month. A spokesperson for the UK government stated, “The UK Government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate.” They also reiterated the long-standing policy of not disclosing detailed information about individual security arrangements, citing concerns over compromising their integrity and the safety of individuals involved.

During Harry’s last visit to the UK in September 2023, a concerning incident occurred. According to a report by The Telegraph, a “known stalker” came “within feet” of him on two separate occasions. Such incidents have raised alarms about the duke’s security while he is in the country, further intensifying the scrutiny of his protection arrangements.

As the review progresses, the outcome will have implications not only for Harry but also for the broader discussion surrounding security provisions for members of the royal family, particularly those who have stepped back from official duties. The situation remains dynamic, and updates are expected as the reassessment concludes in the coming weeks.
