From 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on March 15, 2024, residents in these areas should prepare for downpours that could bring nearly a month’s worth of rain. The forecast indicates that some locations may receive between 50 mm and 70 mm of rain, resulting in potential flooding, travel disruptions, and power outages.

Forecasts highlight that the worst-hit areas will include Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, and Powys. In southwestern Wales, warnings extend to Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath Port Talbot, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, and the Vale of Glamorgan. Residents in these regions are advised to brace for adverse weather conditions throughout the day.

Severe Weather Impact and Flood Alerts

The Met Office’s weather advisory mentions that “heavy rain may lead to some travel delays and flooding in a few places” on Wednesday. The rain is expected to be persistent and, at times, heavy across south and southwest Wales. It is anticipated that 30 mm to 40 mm of rain will fall widely, with higher amounts concentrated on the south-west facing hills.

Flooding poses a real threat, with alerts already established for the River Greta and River Derwent in Cumbria, which are near several campsites close to Keswick. Additional concerns extend to the Exmoor Rivers in Devon and the Upper River Tamar, which delineates the border between Devon and Cornwall.

Natural Resources Wales has identified several flood alerts, particularly in the upper Towy catchment upstream of Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, and in Llanelli, which includes nearby areas such as Llangennech, Pwll, and Burry Port.
