Aldi Leads UK Supermarkets with £13 Per Hour Pay for Assistants

Aldi has announced plans to become the first UK supermarket to pay its assistants a minimum of £13 per hour, effective from September 1, 2023. This increase positions Aldi as the highest-paying supermarket in the UK, which previously raised its minimum hourly wages to £12.75 nationally and £14.05 in London earlier this year.

Staff working within the Greater London area will earn at least £14.33 per hour, significantly surpassing the Real Living Wage of £12.60 and the National Living Wage of £12.21. In addition, long-serving employees will see their hourly pay rise to £13.93 nationally and £14.64 in London. Aldi emphasizes its commitment to staff welfare, as it remains the only supermarket that offers paid breaks, which translates to an additional £1,385 annually for the average employee.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK, expressed pride in the company’s achievements, stating, “Our people are the driving force behind our success. This latest investment in pay is a reflection of their hard work and the incredible contribution they make. We’re proud to remain the UK’s highest-paying supermarket and will continue to support our colleagues.”

Aldi is also investing £650 million to expand its operations from 1,050 to 1,500 stores across the UK. The company has plans to open ten new outlets this summer in locations including Caterham, Sheffield, and Fulham Broadway, and currently employs approximately 45,000 staff members.

In comparison, rival supermarket Lidl recently increased hourly pay for 28,000 workers on April 1, with entry-level wages rising to £12.75 nationally and £14.00 in London as part of a £15 million investment in employee compensation.

The announcement from Aldi reflects broader trends in the retail sector, where competitive pay is becoming increasingly vital for attracting and retaining talent. With rising living costs and inflation impacting consumers, supermarkets are under pressure to offer more attractive pay rates and benefits to their employees.
