Barclays Clarifies Fees for Cash Withdrawals Abroad

A customer recently faced unexpected fees when withdrawing cash while traveling abroad, prompting Barclays to clarify its transaction policies. The incident occurred when the customer attempted to make a withdrawal at a Deutsche Bank ATM in Spain and was charged €5 (£4.37) despite believing there were no fees based on information from Barclays’ website.

The customer reached out to Barclays via social media, expressing confusion after discovering a section on the bank’s site that stated no cash charges apply for withdrawals made at ATMs within the Global ATM Alliance. This alliance typically allows customers to evade extra fees at networked ATMs. However, the website also details a 2.75 percent non-sterling transaction fee for business and corporate banking customers, and a 2.99 percent fee for personal accounts, applicable to all cash withdrawals made in foreign currencies.

In response to the customer’s concerns, Barclays stated, “There is a standard 2.99% non-Sterling transaction fee for each withdrawal, and some ATM providers charge for the use of their machine.” This clarification highlights the complexities surrounding withdrawal charges, which can vary depending on the ATM provider.

Understanding Withdrawal Charges

The information on Barclays’ website explicitly outlines that customers will incur a 2.75% or 2.99% non-sterling transaction fee when using their debit cards abroad or making payments in non-sterling currencies. This includes cash withdrawals in foreign currencies, debit card payments, refunds, and online shopping on non-UK websites.

Furthermore, the bank noted that ATM operators may impose additional fees, which can lead to unexpected charges during international travel. Customers are advised to check for such fees before making withdrawals at unfamiliar ATMs.

Barclays has also recommended that customers keep their contact information updated to receive alerts during overseas transactions. The bank stated, “We do always recommend making sure your mobile number is up to date on our systems just in case we need to message you when you’re abroad as part of safeguarding your account.” Customers can easily update their details via Barclays Online Banking or the Barclays app, or by contacting the bank directly.

Planning for International Travel

When preparing for international trips, it is essential for travelers to research ATM locations near their accommodations. Barclays encourages the use of the global ATM locator tool available on the Visa website to help consumers find the nearest cash machines.

As more people travel internationally, understanding the fees associated with cash withdrawals and payments is crucial for managing expenses effectively. By clarifying these charges, Barclays aims to provide transparency and assist customers in making informed financial decisions while abroad.
