Long-Distance Cycle Route Near Inverness Reopens Amid Upgrades
Transport Scotland has announced the reopening of a significant long-distance cycle route south of Inverness, which had been closed due to ongoing works on the A9 dual carriageway. The temporary reopening of the National Cycle Network Route 7 allows for essential maintenance and improvement works on the current diversion during the Tomatin to Moy roadworks.
The Scottish Government agency aims to enhance access for non-motorised users as cycling activities are expected to peak in 2026. A spokesperson for Transport Scotland expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the public and assured that updates will be provided as work progresses.
In the meantime, road users on the A9 are advised to approach the area with caution, adhering to the temporary speed limit of 40 mph and following signs that indicate non-motorised users crossing ahead. The cycle route modification means that instead of crossing the A9 at the Invereen roundabout, cyclists will continue alongside the northbound carriageway on an existing paved pathway for approximately 1.3 kilometers. They will then cross the A9 approximately 70 meters south of the Dalmagarry farm junction, as they did prior to the roadworks.
Ongoing Improvements and Safety Measures
The spokesperson added that signage along the route will be updated to reflect these changes. To ensure continued safety and usability, the route will be inspected weekly by Balfour Beatty. In addition, existing QR codes will be repositioned at various locations along the route, allowing users to report any concerns they may have.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all users of the route for their patience while we undertake this work,” the spokesperson stated. As the improvements progress, Transport Scotland noted that adjustments might be necessary due to uncontrollable circumstances such as weather conditions. Should changes occur, the agency will keep all road users and stakeholders informed through further communication.
The reopening marks a significant step in improving cycling infrastructure in the region, promoting sustainable transportation and enhancing safety for all users. The long-distance cycle route not only benefits cyclists but also contributes positively to the local community by encouraging outdoor activities and promoting health.
