Major Fire on A1(M) Causes Significant Delays for Drivers
A lorry fire has resulted in the closure of two lanes on the A1(M) Northbound, causing significant delays for motorists. The incident occurred at approximately 12:16 PM on October 3, 2023, near junction J13 A1307, close to The Stukeleys in Cambridgeshire. Emergency services have been deployed to manage the situation and assist in clearing the area.
According to traffic data monitoring company Inrix, the fire has led to queueing traffic, with two of the three lanes on the Northbound side now closed. Delays are also reported on the opposite side of the motorway as onlookers slow down to view the scene.
Firefighters Respond to Incident
Firefighters from the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were called to the scene shortly after the fire was reported. Two crews remain actively working to extinguish the blaze and ensure safety for all road users. A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed, “At around 12:16 PM, crews were called to reports of a lorry fire on the A1 Northbound between Brampton and Sawtry. Crews have been tackling the fire using hose reels, and the incident has now scaled down. Two crews remain in attendance. Lane closures have been in place while firefighters have been responding to the incident.”
Traffic Impact and Ongoing Updates
As the situation develops, motorists are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected area. The Cambridgeshire Police have also issued a statement highlighting the ongoing delays, noting, “There is a lorry on fire in the hard shoulder on the Northbound carriageway. Currently, two lanes are closed to traffic.”
