Robert De Niro Launches Manchester’s Nobu Skyscraper Project
Robert De Niro made a notable appearance in Manchester to celebrate the groundbreaking of the city’s forthcoming Nobu skyscraper, which is set to become the tallest building in the city center. This ambitious project, developed by Salboy, will feature a Nobu restaurant, luxury hotel, and upscale residences, marking a significant addition to Manchester’s skyline.
Approximately 200 guests attended the ceremony held in a historic brick-arched vault off Albion Street. The event combined glamour with the excitement surrounding the development, underscoring Manchester’s status as an evolving urban landscape. The Nobu tower is part of the broader Viadux cluster, which includes a previous phase that transformed Victorian railway vaults into attractive leisure spaces.
At the ceremony, De Niro joined his business partners, including Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper, as well as Salboy’s managing director, Simon Ismail. The gathering featured a video introduction from Salboy’s founder, Fred Done, who described the Nobu tower as his company’s “masterpiece.” Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig expressed enthusiasm for the investment, emphasizing that Manchester is a “city that’s going places.”
Mr. De Niro, known for his roles in films such as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, appeared eager yet slightly unfamiliar with Manchester. He acknowledged he “did not know much” about the city but was impressed by its “real character and creative passion.” The actor expressed his excitement about returning upon completion of the project, which is expected to take around six years.
Chef Nobu echoed similar sentiments, stating, “It’s a city with a great spirit and great energy.” He highlighted that this project is not merely about a hotel or residences; it is fundamentally about community and lifestyle. “We are proud to be here and part of it. Viva Manchester!” he exclaimed, showcasing the collaborative spirit behind the venture.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured an unconventional twist. Guests took turns using a spade to prod a long, thin box of earth placed before the stage. Architect Ian Simpson, recognized for designing many of Manchester’s iconic skyscrapers, participated in the event. He has been referred to as the “Godfather of Manchester’s modern skyline,” a title that reflects his significant impact on the city’s architectural landscape.
Following the speeches, attendees had the opportunity to network over coffee, as the chilly weather prompted a strong preference for warm beverages. A short press conference followed, during which De Niro engaged with reporters about his impressions of Manchester. When asked to compare winning an Oscar to enjoying Chef Nobu’s cuisine, he remarked with a smile, “They’re both totally different experiences.”
In response to inquiries about their enthusiasm for launching new venues globally, De Niro affirmatively stated, “Of course!” Teper added that the team remains motivated to explore new projects, confirming that Manchester would indeed be one of their latest ventures.
Chef Nobu concluded the event by expressing gratitude to Salboy for the opportunity to expand into Manchester. He acknowledged the challenges of new projects but praised his dedicated team. “Now we need to try our best,” he affirmed, encapsulating the collaborative spirit that characterizes this exciting development.
As the Nobu skyscraper project advances, it promises to enhance Manchester’s cultural landscape, offering a blend of luxury and community-oriented spaces that align with the city’s dynamic spirit.
