UK’s Smallest Hotel Opens in Historic Victorian Toilet Space

The United Kingdom’s smallest hotel, named The Netty, has officially opened its doors in an unexpected location: a former Victorian lavatory situated beneath a busy road in St Giles, Oxford. This unique boutique hotel has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past 17 years, turning a disused public toilet into a charming accommodation space.
Originally constructed in 1895, these gents’ toilets served the public until their closure in 2008 due to safety concerns. Following years of inactivity, local business owner Gwyn Harries-Jones acquired the site with the intent of revitalizing it. After numerous development proposals, the vision for a hotel finally came to fruition, breathing new life into the historic structure.
Innovative Design and Local Inspiration
The Netty features two exclusive suites, each measuring 30 square metres, with private street-level entrances. The hotel’s design blends modern luxury with historical elements, showcasing local craftsmanship while preserving some original features, such as the distinctive floor tiles. The name “The Netty” is derived from an old Geordie term for an outhouse, reflecting the hotel’s deep-rooted connection to the past.
Hotel manager Ana Pinheiro expressed her excitement about welcoming guests to this unique space. “We are delighted to welcome guests to our boutique space where they can experience the beauty of Oxford,” she stated. The hotel aims to offer visitors an immersive experience that highlights the unique history and character of its location.
Despite its unconventional origins, The Netty is positioned to attract both tourists and locals seeking a distinctive lodging experience in Oxford. With its intimate setting and rich historical backdrop, the hotel offers an opportunity for guests to engage with the city’s heritage in a way that few other accommodations can provide.
For more information on bookings and amenities, interested parties can visit the hotel’s official website: https://thenetty.co.uk/. This innovative project serves as a testament to the potential of repurposing historical structures and the creativity of local entrepreneurs in bringing new ideas to life.
