Virgin Media O2 Confirms 3G Network Switch-Off by Early 2026
Virgin Media O2 has announced the impending switch-off of its legacy 3G mobile network, with completion expected in early 2026. This decision, confirmed by Chief Technology Officer Jeanie York, will enable the telecommunications provider to reallocate radio spectrum, enhancing coverage and boosting mobile broadband speeds for its 4G and 5G networks. The transition is designed to benefit customers by providing faster and more reliable mobile services.
The 3G network switch-off has been a planned initiative, initially scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. Although most areas will see the discontinuation of 3G services in the coming weeks, some locations may retain 3G signals until early 2026. This phased approach allows for a smoother transition as the operator upgrades its existing infrastructure.
According to York, “Our 3G network has already been withdrawn across many UK locations, with the final areas set to follow shortly.” She emphasized the urgency for customers still using 3G-only handsets to consider upgrading to newer devices. “I’d like to take this opportunity to urge anybody who is still using a 3G-only handset to please visit your local store or call us to upgrade as soon as possible.”
The company is not discontinuing its 2G network at this time, which means customers who relied on 3G but lack access to 4G or 5G will still be able to make calls and send texts. However, they will lose mobile broadband connectivity until further upgrades are implemented. O2 has begun transitioning customers away from 2G this year, but complete withdrawal will not occur for several more years.
As part of its commitment to customer support, Virgin Media O2 has reached out directly to those affected by the 3G switch-off. The company has offered significant discounts on new devices and free upgrades for vulnerable customers. Many individuals have already taken advantage of these offers, gaining access to reliable technology for years to come.
York highlighted the company’s ongoing investment in its mobile network, stating, “When you do upgrade, you’ll be joining the millions of other O2 customers benefitting from our Mobile Transformation Plan.” This plan includes an investment of £700 million in network improvements within the year, averaging approximately £2 million per day.
The upgrades include enhancements at major venues, such as the Allianz Stadium, Wembley, and the Stadium of Light, as well as improved coverage along major roads and in coastal areas. The deployment of small cells in busy city centers and tourist destinations aims to elevate connectivity standards, ensuring customers experience the best in mobile service.
As Virgin Media O2 progresses towards the complete switch-off of its 3G network, the company remains focused on providing a seamless transition for its customers, ensuring they stay connected with the latest technology.
