Lady Gaga Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles Filming A Star Is Born
In a revealing interview, Lady Gaga disclosed her struggle with severe mental health issues while filming the acclaimed movie A Star Is Born. During this time, the singer was coping with intense personal challenges, including the effects of trauma and overwork, which pushed her to the verge of a ‘psychotic break’. This candid admission sheds light on the hidden battles often faced by those in the public eye and emphasizes the significant toll that fame can take on mental well-being.
The period surrounding the film’s release in 2018 marked a pinnacle in Gaga’s career. She had recently headlined the Super Bowl and released her album Joanne, which represented a shift in her musical style. Despite this success, her mental health deteriorated, leading her to take lithium, a mood stabiliser, while working on the film that would eventually earn her an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2019.
In the interview, Gaga recounted feelings of instability and vulnerability, sharing that the crisis escalated to a point where her family noticed the change. Her sister’s heartbreaking observation, “I don’t see my sister anymore,” underscored the severity of Gaga’s struggles. This prompted her to cancel parts of her tour, a decision that reflected the depth of her personal crisis. Gaga explained, “I couldn’t do anything. I completely crashed. There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better.”
Despite these challenges, Gaga views her survival and recovery as a significant achievement. “I feel really lucky to be alive,” she stated, recognizing that her experiences were crucial in shaping the person she is today. This narrative of resilience has become an integral part of her public persona, as she actively works to destigmatise mental health issues.
Gaga’s journey did not hinder her creativity; rather, it inspired her artistic expression. Her 2020 album, Chromatica, centered on themes of overcoming personal trauma, showcasing her ability to transform pain into purpose. The support from her fiancé, Michael Polansky, has been vital in her recovery, providing an unwavering foundation during her most challenging days.
The release of her upcoming album, MAYHEM, is a testament to her artistic rebirth. This album, which emerged from her journey of self-discovery, has already garnered significant acclaim, receiving seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. The lead single, “Abracadabra,” has become a global sensation, along with her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die With a Smile,” which spent an impressive 18 weeks at number one on the Billboard Global 200 chart.
Lady Gaga continues to stand out not only as a pop icon but also as a beacon of honesty and strength, inspiring millions to prioritise mental health and embrace the possibility of healing. Her story reminds the world that even amidst the heights of fame, addressing personal struggles is essential for true success and well-being.
