Rod Stewart Overcomes Health Challenges to Shine at Glastonbury

Rod Stewart faced a significant health challenge before his highly anticipated performance at the Glastonbury Festival in June 2023. The iconic musician, aged 80, required medical intervention due to a severe flu that had forced him to cancel previous shows leading up to the festival. Stewart took to Instagram to share, “My doctor ordered a bit more rest while I recover from the flu. Thanks for your love and understanding.”
In the days leading up to the festival, Stewart’s wife, Penny Lancaster, 54, took him to a throat specialist in London. According to reports, the examination involved inserting a camera to assess his vocal cords. Following this, he underwent voice coaching, hot and cold steaming, and was prescribed strict voice rest. Remarkably, his voice returned just two days before his scheduled performance.
Lancaster described her husband’s illness, stating, “He has never been so ill in his life. (But) it all turned around and he was on top of the world.” She encouraged Stewart to visualize himself on stage, emphasizing the importance of positive thinking as he prepared for his return.
The festival marked Stewart’s first appearance at Glastonbury in 23 years. He performed in the “Legends” slot on a Sunday afternoon, where he was joined by his sons Alastair, 19, and Aiden, 14, as well as daughters Ruby, 38, and Renee, 33. In contrast, his 96-year-old sister, Mary, chose to attend a fan club convention in his honor, where attendees watched his performance on a big screen.
Backstage, Lancaster described the atmosphere as “electric.” She revealed that Stewart’s pre-stage ritual included a quick workout on an exercise bike to loosen up and a glass of Bacardi and Coke for a “little kickstart.” Despite his extensive experience performing, Stewart felt nervous before taking the stage. Lancaster noted, “I could tell by his face he was nervous. I’ve only seen that once before, performing for the Queen in a small room at St James’s Palace.”
Once on stage, Stewart’s nerves quickly dissipated. After his set, he was all smiles, telling Lancaster, “We did it.” His triumphant return to the Glastonbury stage not only showcased his resilience but also highlighted the support and encouragement from his family during a challenging time.
Representatives for Rod Stewart have been contacted for further comment regarding his health and performance at the festival.
