Johnson & Johnson Expands Neurovascular R&D in Galway to Enhance Stroke Treatments
Johnson & Johnson Medtech is significantly expanding its research and development operations at the Galway facility in Ireland. This initiative aims to enhance the company’s focus on addressing specific medical needs related to neurovascular diseases, particularly in stroke treatment. The Galway site, located in Ballybrit Business Park, has become a central hub for the organization’s neuro thromboembolic initiative (NTI) and research, development, and innovation (RD&I) efforts.
The expansion is designed to bolster Johnson & Johnson’s capabilities in developing stroke-specific and liquid embolic procedural technologies. This move is critical as acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes are recognized as two leading causes of disability and death globally. The company has made substantial investments in Galway since first establishing operations there in 2017, focusing on enhancing its engineering, RD&I, and manufacturing capabilities.
Strengthening Ireland’s Role in Medical Technology
The announcement coincides with the first meeting of the Neurovascular Global Scientific Advisory Board in Galway, providing an opportunity for local teams to connect with leaders in the stroke technology and care sector. Commenting on the expansion, Hildegarde Naughton, the Minister for Education and Youth of Ireland, stated, “This Johnson & Johnson Neurovascular R&D centre underscores Ireland’s status as a global leader in medical technologies. This investment further strengthens our reputation for research excellence.”
Michael Gilvarry, head of R&D for Johnson & Johnson Medtech Neurovascular and general manager of the Galway site, highlighted the expanded focus of the team. He noted, “By expanding our remit from ischemic stroke to include chronic subdural hematoma and other neurovascular conditions, our talented workforce in Galway is applying their scientific knowledge and engineering skills in new ways to find solutions to these life-threatening conditions.” He emphasized that Ireland plays a crucial role in the company’s global innovation network.
Investment Supported by IDA Ireland
The expansion is backed by IDA Ireland, with CEO Michael Lohan emphasizing Galway’s position as a pivotal center for Europe’s medical technology sector. He remarked that the work at the Galway site aligns closely with the new strategy, Adapt Intelligently, and will create high-skilled job opportunities for local talent. Lohan added, “This will also help shape the future of stroke care through cutting-edge innovation developed here in the west of Ireland.”
This strategic enhancement at the Galway facility underscores Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to advancing neurovascular capabilities, ultimately benefiting patients worldwide. The expansion reflects the company’s long-term vision for growth in the field of healthcare, particularly in addressing critical medical challenges associated with strokes.
As the company prepares to implement these developments, the focus remains firmly on innovation and patient care, aiming to deliver effective solutions to those affected by neurovascular conditions.
