King Charles has revealed a significant update regarding his health, announcing that his cancer treatment schedule will be reduced starting in the New Year. This announcement follows nearly two years since his diagnosis with an undisclosed type of cancer, which he first disclosed on February 6, 2023. The King, aged 77, has undergone weekly treatments since he was diagnosed in early 2024.

In a message recorded at Clarence House and aired on Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign, the monarch emphasized the critical role of early detection through cancer screening programs. His remarks were part of a week-long initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds to support cancer patients and research.

During his address, the King shared, “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives.” He highlighted the positive impact that early detection has had on his own journey, allowing him to maintain an active lifestyle while undergoing treatment. Charles stated, “Today I am able to share with you the good news that thanks to early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to doctors’ orders, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year.”

He expressed gratitude for the advancements in cancer care, noting that this milestone in his recovery serves as a testament to the progress made in recent years. The King also addressed the troubling reality that over nine million individuals in the UK are not current with their cancer screenings.

“Too often,” he noted, “people avoid screening because they imagine it may be frightening, embarrassing or uncomfortable. Yet, when they do take that step, they are often relieved to learn they do not need further tests, or they benefit from early detection.”

The Stand Up To Cancer campaign coincides with the launch of a new national resource, screeningchecker.co.uk, designed to help individuals determine their eligibility for various cancer screenings. The King expressed enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “This simple tool allows you to check whether you are eligible for breast, bowel or cervical cancer screening.”

As he concluded his message, he urged the public to commit to cancer screening as part of their New Year resolutions, emphasizing that, “Your life – or the life of someone you love – may depend upon it.”

The announcement came just before a live program hosted by television presenter Davina McCall, who recently shared her own battle with breast cancer. This year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign aims to engage the public and raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis.

The King’s cancer diagnosis was publicly announced after he underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate, during which his cancer was detected. Since then, he has continued with his royal duties, including overseas engagements, while managing his health.

A spokesperson from Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King has responded exceptionally well to treatment, stating, “His Majesty has responded exceptionally well to treatment, and his doctors advise that ongoing measures will now move into a precautionary phase.” They added that this status will be continuously monitored to ensure his ongoing recovery.

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, expressed appreciation for the King’s support of the campaign, noting that public figures discussing their health can inspire others to seek medical advice. She remarked, “We know that when public figures speak openly about their cancer diagnosis, it can prompt others to check in on their health.”

As the King continues to engage with the public and fulfill his royal responsibilities, his message serves as a reminder of the importance of cancer awareness and the transformative impact of early detection.
