NHS Warns Public of Serious Risks Linked to Common Covid Symptoms
The NHS has issued an urgent warning regarding a common symptom of Covid-19, advising the public that negligence may lead to serious complications. This alert comes as Covid cases continue to rise across the UK, largely attributed to the presence of the new dominant strains, known as Status and Nimbus.
The latest symptoms catalogued on the NHS website includes a high temperature or shivering, a new, continuous cough, and a loss or change in the sense of smell or taste. Other reported symptoms encompass shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, headaches, sore throats, nasal congestion, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, and nausea. The Nimbus strain is particularly associated with severe throat pain, persistent fatigue, a mild cough, and digestive issues, while Status is noted for causing a persistent dry cough and a sore throat that feels like “razor blades.”
One symptom that stands out across these strains is a persistent cough, which can lead to discomfort and warrants medical attention if it lasts longer than three weeks. The NHS specifically advises against certain actions that could exacerbate this condition.
Guidelines for Managing Symptoms
According to the NHS, lying flat on one’s back when suffering from a cough should be avoided. Instead, individuals should lie on their side or sit upright to prevent mucus from accumulating at the back of the throat, which can worsen coughing due to postnasal drip. Maintaining an elevated position with additional pillows can facilitate better mucus drainage and reduce the risk of complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
In more severe instances, persistent coughing can lead to throat irritation, voice changes, and even aggravate asthma symptoms. If coughing is severe or lingers, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional to exclude underlying conditions, including potential heart issues indicated by a dry nighttime cough.
The NHS has also issued several recommendations to manage Covid symptoms effectively. Patients should focus on getting adequate rest and maintaining hydration, ensuring that urine is pale yellow or clear. Taking medications such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can alleviate discomfort. For those experiencing a cough, a teaspoon of honey can provide relief, but it is important to avoid giving honey to infants under 12 months.
Additional Precautions and Self-Management
The NHS recommends several additional precautions: avoid using a fan in enclosed spaces as it may facilitate the spread of the virus, and if experiencing breathlessness, try to remain calm as panic can exacerbate the sensation.
To alleviate symptoms of breathlessness, individuals can adjust their environment by lowering the heating or opening a window. Breathing techniques are also beneficial; inhaling slowly through the nose and exhaling gently through pursed lips can help. Sitting upright and relaxing the shoulders, along with leaning forward slightly for support, can further assist in managing breathlessness.
The NHS’s warnings and guidelines highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing Covid-19 symptoms promptly. By following these recommendations, individuals can better manage their health and potentially avoid more severe complications associated with the virus.
