Robot Enables Immune-Compromised Children to Experience Zoo Visit
Children with weakened immune systems, such as those receiving cancer treatment, often face significant restrictions on their activities. However, on November 24, 2025, two young patients, Riley, age seven, and Josy, age five, were able to virtually explore the Edinburgh Zoo thanks to innovative technology that includes a robot designed for remote interaction.
Both children, who are immunocompromised, participated in a special behind-the-scenes visit made possible by the AV1 robot. This remote-controlled device, operated via a computer or smartphone, acted as their eyes and ears, allowing them to engage with zoo animals in real time without leaving the safety of their hospital or homes.
The AV1 robot features a built-in camera, speaker, and microphone, enabling the children to interact with zoo staff and learn about various animals, including meerkats, penguins, and giraffes. Through a secure application on their tablets or phones, Riley and Josy could control the robot and experience the zoo from a unique perspective.
SpecialEffect, a UK-based charity dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities through technology, facilitated this extraordinary event. The charity has been pioneering the use of assistive technology to ensure that children like Riley and Josy can enjoy experiences that might otherwise be inaccessible due to health concerns.
Jaima Smith, Community and Discovery Programme Officer at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), expressed the significance of this initiative, stating, “Being able to help create such a special day for these children is a huge part of why we do what we do here at RZSS. Hearing their laughter and excitement as they explored the zoo and connected with our animals was truly heart-warming.”
This initiative not only highlights the potential of technology in enhancing experiences for those with health challenges but also underscores the importance of community efforts in supporting children facing serious medical conditions. The joy and excitement displayed by Riley and Josy serve as a reminder of the positive impact that innovative solutions can have on individuals’ lives.
