Recent weeks have posed significant challenges for the **Saundersfoot Medical Centre** as a surge in illnesses, including Covid-19, has strained patient access to healthcare. In response, local county councillors have scheduled a meeting for **December 10, 2023**, to collaborate on addressing these issues and finding effective solutions.

Councillors **Chris Williams** and **Alec Cormack** have expressed their commitment to supporting the surgery during this difficult period. “As councillors, we have received numerous emails from local residents expressing their concerns,” stated Cllr Williams. He emphasized the council’s ongoing communication with the surgery team to provide necessary support, acknowledging the considerable pressure faced by the medical staff.

The early onset of winter illnesses, combined with rising Covid-19 infections, has exacerbated the situation. In light of these challenges, the surgery has implemented several improvements to enhance patient access to appointments. Recent upgrades to the computer system now allow patients to book more same-day appointments online starting from **07:45** each day.

Additionally, the number of pre-bookable online appointments has been increased threefold. By the end of November, patients will also have the option to automatically book appointments over the phone, streamlining the process further. The surgery plans to reintroduce telephone triage, enabling staff to assess call urgency and direct patients to the most appropriate care.

“While these measures are designed to alleviate the morning rush and improve efficiency, we understand that some patients are still experiencing difficulties in securing appointments,” Cllr Williams noted. He added that the upcoming meeting will focus on these concerns and ensure that the needs of local residents are adequately represented.

The surgery also encourages patients to utilize the **Common Ailments Scheme**, available through local pharmacies, including **Saundersfoot Pharmacy**. This scheme provides advice and treatment for various minor illnesses without the need for a GP appointment.

As the situation evolves, the collaboration between local councillors and the Saundersfoot Medical Centre aims to enhance patient care and address the pressing needs of the community.
