Stilton Village Prepares for Inaugural Christmas Light Switch-On

A village in Cambridgeshire is set to celebrate the holiday season with its first-ever Christmas light switch-on. Stilton, located near Peterborough, will host the inaugural ceremony on November 23, 2024, from 16:00 to 18:00 at the village centre. The event, organized by the Stilton Christmas Light Committee, comes after a dedicated fundraising effort to bring festive cheer to the community.
Committee member Liana Barley expressed her excitement about the event, noting the village’s historical absence of a Christmas light celebration. “Stilton is the village Christmas forgot when it comes to festive lights,” she said. “But we are finally set to sparkle this Christmas season.”
The committee has worked hard to prepare for this festive occasion, unveiling a beautiful Christmas tree adorned with lights. Barley acknowledged the contributions of local volunteers and the support from the Stilton Parish Council, which played a crucial role in making the event possible. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers, we’re ready to shine brighter than ever,” she added.
For years, one family in Stilton has decorated their home with Christmas lights to raise funds for Magpas, a charity that provides emergency medical services. Their efforts have brought joy to the community, which Barley hopes to replicate with the new event.
Despite facing challenges, such as the village’s broad streets making traditional string lighting unsuitable, the committee secured grants from multiple sources, including the Stilton Parish Council and the Huntingdon Futures Grant. “We have faced challenges, but our community’s support has been invaluable,” Barley noted.
The highlight of the festivities will be a visit from Father Christmas, who will officially switch on the lights and greet children. He will also be available for photos and to collect gift wish lists from eager youngsters.
The event promises a variety of food and refreshments, including hot chocolate, offerings from Howe’s Fish and Chip van, and sweet treats from Holy Desserts. A raffle will also take place, featuring prizes such as family tickets to watch Peterborough United play.
In addition to the main events, the village will feature decorated phone boxes and crochet creations by local artist Janice, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Barley concluded, “Let’s make this a memorable first switch-on event and work towards making this an annual celebration. We hope that it will grow and get bigger and better. Come and support us in our first year, and let’s learn and grow together!”
As Stilton prepares for this landmark celebration, the community looks forward to a festive season that promises to bring people together and create lasting memories.
