The Arlington School District has launched its participation in Start With Hello Week, a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting connection, inclusion, and kindness among students. The program engages students at both Fisher Elementary and Arlington Memorial High School in activities designed to encourage outreach and collaboration, creating a more inclusive environment.

Activities to Foster Inclusion

Throughout the week, students partake in various activities that emphasize the importance of reaching out to others. The initiative is part of Sandy Hook Promise, which seeks to teach empathy and foster stronger, safer communities across the United States. The week commenced with upperclassmen welcoming younger students with smiles, high fives, and friendly greetings, setting a positive tone for the days ahead.

As part of the initiative, students received green ribbons, which symbolize their commitment to kindness and inclusion throughout the district. Each day of the week features a different theme, allowing students to identify trusted adults, engage in interactive classroom activities, and contribute to a “chain of kindness.” This visual representation connects each student’s dedication to treating one another with respect and care.

Highlighting Unity and Belonging

Later in the week, Arlington will host a special event titled “Be the Rainbow.” Each grade level will wear a designated color, creating a vibrant display of unity throughout the schools. Missy Kroeber, a representative from Arlington Communications, emphasized the significance of the week, stating, “Start With Hello Week gives our students the chance to pause, look around, and see the power of simply acknowledging each other. A hello can spark a friendship, break down barriers, and remind us all that we belong here together.”

By participating in this national movement, the Arlington School District reinforces its commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment where every student feels seen, valued, and included. The activities during this week not only promote kindness but also encourage students to reflect on the importance of community and connection.
