Discover Souillac: A Hidden Gem in France’s Dordogne Valley

Nestled in the scenic Dordogne Valley, the small town of Souillac has emerged as a delightful alternative to France’s more famed destinations. During a recent five-day trip, Lifestyle Editor Rachel Moss and her companions discovered the charm and warmth of this lesser-known locale while attending a wedding at a nearby château.
Souillac may not be on everyone’s travel itinerary, but it offers a unique experience that rivals larger cities. The town’s picturesque square comes alive with the sounds of an accordion, the sight of a local artist painting, and the aroma of freshly unpacked cheese at the Friday market. For Moss and her friends, the atmosphere was quintessentially French, encapsulating everything they hoped to find.
Experiencing the Heart of Souillac
Upon arriving, the group embraced the local culture, indulging in a buttery croissant and coffee while soaking in the surroundings. Moss described the town as “understated and relaxed,” contrasting it with the hustle and bustle typical of more touristy areas. The peaceful mornings and lively market days allowed them to connect with locals, rather than being surrounded by fellow tourists.
Market day in Souillac is a vibrant affair, showcasing a variety of locally-grown produce. Moss recounted her favorite experience of strolling through the market, purchasing cheese, wine, and other delicacies, before enjoying a picnic in the park. The extended Farmer’s market from July to August adds to the town’s appeal, offering an opportunity for visitors to engage with the community.
The hospitality of Souillac’s residents stands out, particularly in comparison to experiences in larger cities where tourists can sometimes feel unwelcome. The warmth of the locals enhances the overall experience, making visitors feel truly at home.
Activities Beyond the Town
While Souillac offers its own charm, it also serves as a gateway to a range of activities in the surrounding area. For those extending their stay, outdoor adventures await. Moss and her companions embarked on a 22-kilometer kayaking trip from the Cap Evasion canoe base in Saint Julien de Lampon, just a short drive from Souillac.
The scenic route along the Dordogne River provided stunning views of lush landscapes, rocky cliffs, and historic châteaux. The journey included stops for swimming and picnicking, adding a touch of spontaneity to their adventure. For those who prefer cycling, the old railway line from Souillac to the picturesque town of Sarlat offers an exhilarating experience.
Reaching Souillac is straightforward, though it may require a bit more effort than traveling to larger cities. The nearest airport is Brive–Souillac Airport, located 13 kilometers away, with limited flights available. Moss and her group opted to fly into Toulouse and drive two hours to their destination, allowing them to enjoy the scenic route through the French countryside.
In summary, Souillac stands as a testament to the beauty of France beyond its iconic landmarks. Its charm, welcoming locals, and vibrant culture provide an experience that is both enriching and memorable. For travelers seeking a unique destination, Souillac is undoubtedly worth the journey.
