Highland League Club Honors Legacy of ‘Mrs Buckie Thistle’

The Highland League club Buckie Thistle has expressed its profound sadness following the death of its longest-serving committee member, Sandra Paterson, affectionately known as ‘Mrs Buckie Thistle’. She passed away on August 26, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that spanned over three decades.
Sandra’s connection with Buckie Thistle began in 1989, when she volunteered in the tea hut during a match against Celtic at Victoria Park. Her commitment to the club extended far beyond her initial role, as she became a fixture in the boardroom, dedicating a remarkable 36 years of service to the organization. Throughout her time, she not only baked cakes for every home match but also traveled on the team bus for away games, displaying unwavering support for the players she referred to as “her boys.”
A Life of Commitment and Passion
Sandra’s journey with Buckie Thistle culminated in a fitting return to Parkhead for a rematch against Celtic, marking 35 years since her first game. Her passion for the club was evident, and she was a beloved figure among players and fans alike. The club released a heartfelt statement, expressing their sorrow at the loss of their “boardroom queen.”
“Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our longest-serving committee member and boardroom queen, Mrs Buckie Thistle, Sandra Paterson,” the statement read.
The statement also conveyed condolences to her family, including her husband Allan Paterson, daughter Vicki, and sons Shaun and Euan, many of whom have also contributed significantly to the club’s operations over the years. “Rest in peace Sandra. Forever in our hearts,” it concluded.
Remembering Sandra’s Impact
Club historian Easton Thain reflected on Sandra’s contribution, stating, “To me there is no doubt she should be regarded as one of the greatest ever folk to have served the club in its long, glorious history and one of the shining lights has gone.” He highlighted her role as a welcoming presence at Victoria Park, particularly on match days, where her friendly demeanor and legendary half-time food became part of the club’s charm.
Sandra Paterson’s dedication to Buckie Thistle will be remembered not just for her years of service but for the warmth and joy she brought to the community. Her passing marks a significant loss for the Highland League, where she made countless friends and left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
