McLaren Unveils New Aerodynamic Package at Monza for F1 2025
McLaren has launched a new aerodynamic package for the upcoming Formula 1 race at Monza, aiming to enhance its performance in the competitive 2025 season. This package includes a redesigned front wing, front suspension fairings, rear wing, and beam wing, all tailored to suit the specific demands of the Monza circuit, which is known for its high-speed straights and a need for reduced drag.
The new aerodynamic components are expected to significantly lower drag, a crucial factor at Monza, where efficient configuration is key to achieving optimal speed. The rear wing features a low-downforce design, incorporating a minimal spoon-shaped section in the central part of the wing. This design choice reduces the thickness of the mainplane’s leading edge, which tapers into the endplate. Observations from the side view reveal that the profile is not uniform; instead, it features a deeper section at the endplate, optimizing airflow.
McLaren’s approach also includes the continuation of a box-shaped section in the upper part of the endplate, paired with a contoured lower section. This design retains the upwashing swage line that characterizes McLaren’s wing portfolio. The upper flap, tip section, and endplate cutout are all crafted to complement the low downforce arrangement. While there is no initial trailing edge Gurney flap, McLaren retains the flexibility to add one if necessary.
For this race, McLaren has opted for a slender beam wing aimed at further reducing both downforce and drag. Last year, the team introduced a new lower-downforce rear wing during the Italian Grand Prix but chose not to race it until later events, specifically in Las Vegas, where a wing offering slightly more downforce was preferred for better balance.
Additionally, changes to the front wing and front suspension fairings are implemented to ensure harmony with the rear set-up. Adjustments to the new wing specification will alter the downforce generated, while modifications to the suspension fairings will account for the impact of these changes on the overall flow field.
As McLaren prepares for the Italian Grand Prix, the team’s commitment to innovation and performance enhancement remains evident. The aerodynamic upgrades signify a strategic move to not only improve their competitiveness at Monza but also to set a strong foundation for the remainder of the F1 2025 season.
