New Music Project “Villanelle” Celebrates Artistic Evolution
A new music project titled “Villanelle” has emerged from the coastal town of Bar, Montenegro, showcasing a blend of creativity and nostalgia. The project features the collaboration of Nemanja Bečanović, a director and musician known for his work in the grunge genre, and Željko Milović, a journalist and author recognized for his contributions to Montenegrin pop-rock music. Their latest EP, aptly named “5+1,” comprises five songs and an additional track that completes the thematic experience.
The title “Villanelle” draws inspiration from both literary and historical figures, specifically referencing Idoja Lopez Rianjo, a notorious figure in Basque history. Known as “La Tigresa,” she was recruited into the terrorist group ETA at just 16 years old. Her life story, marked by violence and eventual redemption, serves as a backdrop for the music created by Bečanović and Milović.
Exploring Themes of Redemption and Connection
The EP presents a sound reminiscent of early 1980s electropop, crafted using Bečanović’s retro synthesizers. The mix and mastering were completed by Stefan Pantović, while Milović’s lyrical contributions draw from personal experiences and cultural reflections. One of the standout tracks, “Umoran,” features poignant lyrics that resonate deeply, exploring themes of longing and return.
In the song, Milović expresses a desire to return home, capturing the essence of a weary sailor yearning for connection. The track serves as a powerful introduction to the EP, setting the tone for the subsequent songs, including the evocative “Signali.” The imagery of three white flashes, akin to signals from the region’s only lighthouse, symbolizes a beacon of hope for all sailors navigating the Adriatic Sea.
Musical Influences and Cultural Resonance
Milović’s work on this EP has drawn comparisons to the soundscapes of iconic bands like Joy Division and New Order. The musical direction hints at a renaissance of sound that reflects the ongoing evolution of Montenegrin music. The opening track “Pogledaj” showcases Milović’s poetic talent, blending introspective lyrics with captivating melodies.
The project also pays homage to musical influences from the past, particularly through the track “Uspavanka,” dedicated to the celebrated artist Đorđe Balašević. This tribute underscores Milović’s artistic growth and highlights how past experiences inform his current work.
The final tracks, “Villanelle” and “Prozirna,” encapsulate the essence of the project, blending lyrical depth with intricate arrangements. They reflect a narrative of resilience and the complexities of identity, resonating with listeners who appreciate a rich cultural tapestry.
Overall, “5+1” not only showcases the artistic partnership between Bečanović and Milović but also signifies a broader cultural exploration within Montenegrin music. As they navigate their artistic journey, the duo has successfully created a work that speaks to both personal and collective experiences, inviting listeners to connect with their narratives in a meaningful way. The project is set to launch in March 2024, promising to make a significant impact on the regional music scene.
