Sagrada Familia Claims Title of World’s Tallest Church at 534 Feet
Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia basilica officially became the world’s tallest church on October 30, 2025, after a significant milestone in its ongoing construction. A part of the central tower, known as the Tower of Jesus Christ, was successfully lifted into place, bringing the total height to an impressive 534 feet. This achievement surpasses the previous record held by Germany’s Ulmer Münster, which stands at just over 530 feet.
Sagrada Familia’s current height not only marks a momentous occasion for the church but also signifies a long-awaited recognition of the architectural masterpiece created by Antoni Gaudí. The basilica, which started construction in 1882, has become a symbol of Barcelona and a major international tourist attraction. Despite Gaudí’s original vision, he did not expect the church to be completed during his lifetime, as only one tower was finished at the time of his death in 1926.
The Tower of Jesus Christ is expected to reach a final height of 564 feet upon completion, which is projected to occur in the coming months. The construction process has significantly accelerated, particularly in recent decades, thanks to the influx of visitors. Last year, the church welcomed 4.9 million visitors, with approximately 15% of them coming from the United States. Funds collected from entrance fees are allocated towards the ongoing construction and enhancement of the basilica’s intricate facades and interior.
The construction of Sagrada Familia is far from over, as the church will continue to evolve over the next several years. Church officials anticipate that the basilica will be fully completed around 2035. Additionally, next year marks the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death, and the church plans to host various events to celebrate his enduring legacy. His influence extends beyond Sagrada Familia, with numerous stunning buildings across Barcelona and other regions of Spain also bearing his signature style.
As Sagrada Familia continues to rise above the skyline of Barcelona, it not only secures its place in the record books but also stands as a testament to the enduring vision of Antoni Gaudí and the collective effort to bring this architectural wonder to fruition.
