Teenagers Launch Care Cupboard to Support Peers in Need
Young people in Inverness are stepping up to support their peers facing hardship through a new initiative known as the Care Cupboard. Launched at the Rokzkool Academy, located in the Eastgate Shopping Centre, this project provides free packs containing essential toiletries and household items to those in need.
The Care Cupboard aims to operate similarly to a food bank but focuses on the specific needs of young individuals, particularly as the festive season approaches. To maintain dignity for those seeking assistance, the organizers have introduced a discreet code, “Ask For Grace,” allowing individuals to collect items without needing to disclose their situation.
Community Response and Engagement
Kay Ewen, a founder and trustee of the charity, shared that the idea for the Care Cupboard emerged from discussions during drop-in sessions for teenagers. “We found there were many things they could benefit from immediately, such as snacks or lunch items, as they were hungry after school,” she explained. Additionally, students expressed the need for basic supplies like stationery for their studies, personal care items, and even nail polish remover.
After conducting a survey, the team discovered that many local youths were struggling to afford everyday essentials. Inspired to make a difference, they decided to create a welcoming space where anyone could seek help. The project is supported by funding from the Young Futures Fund of the Asda Foundation and will undergo continuous evaluation to ensure it meets the needs of its users.
“We’re so proud of the students for leading this project from start to finish,” Ewen noted. “They identified the need, came up with the idea, and turned it into something real—something that will help so many.”
Student Voices and Impact
Grace, a 14-year-old student and project leader, emphasized the importance of accessibility. “Everyone should be able to get the basics they need without worrying or feeling embarrassed,” she said. Her sentiments were echoed by fellow volunteer Paige, who pointed out that the packs cater to the diverse needs of young men and women. “No one should be embarrassed about asking for one,” she added, referring to the packs available.
Jack, another volunteer, described the initiative as “extremely thoughtful and helpful.” He noted that the Care Cupboard provides a safe environment where teenagers can collect essentials without facing the potential embarrassment often associated with seeking help. “The fact that they can come in and just grab their essentials without being asked certain questions is just amazing,” he explained.
The Care Cupboard also addresses gaps in resources for young women, particularly regarding access to free sanitary products. One volunteer highlighted that while these items are typically available at schools during term time, they become scarce during holidays. “I think these packs will make a massive difference,” she stated.
The Rokzkool Academy team plans to continue developing the Care Cupboard with support from local donations. Contributions of non-perishable goods, toiletries, or small household items are welcomed.
For more information on how to get involved or to donate, interested individuals can contact Rokzkool Academy at [email protected] or visit their website at www.rokzkoolacademy.org. The charity operates Studio 58, located near the food court, Scran Kitchen, in the Eastgate Shopping Centre.
The Care Cupboard initiative not only provides essential support to young people but also fosters a sense of community and empowerment, reflecting Rokzkool Academy’s commitment to making a positive impact.
