British Couple Moves to Thailand, Slashes Living Costs by 80%
A British couple has relocated to Chiang Mai, Thailand, seeking a more affordable and relaxed lifestyle. Roshni Ward, 30, and Louis Hunt, 33, made the move in September after becoming disillusioned with their life in the UK, where they faced high living costs and a demanding work-life balance. Their decision has led to significant financial savings, with monthly living expenses dropping from over £1,350 to just £300 for rent.
The couple, previously residing in Rye, East Sussex, worked long hours—often exceeding 11 hours a day—leading to feelings of burnout. They cited rising crime rates and unpredictable weather in the UK as contributing factors to their dissatisfaction. Roshni, who worked as a corporate team leader in broadband sales, often found herself taking on extra hours during the weekends, leaving little time for relaxation. Louis, a carpenter, faced similar pressures, spending long hours commuting and working.
Finding Freedom in Thailand
After a holiday in Thailand in December 2024, the couple began to seriously consider relocating. Roshni expressed their desire for a change, stating, “The UK didn’t feel safe, and a poor work-life balance meant we were too burnt out to enjoy life.” Upon returning from their holiday, they started searching for rental properties in Thailand. They ultimately moved to Chiang Mai on September 3, where they embraced the welcoming local culture, beautiful architecture, and warm climate.
Their new home in Thailand costs £300 per month, which includes amenities such as a gym and swimming pool. Comparatively, their previous flat in the UK cost them £1,350. The couple now enjoys significantly lower utility bills as well, with their monthly water bill amounting to just £2.76, a stark contrast to the £76 they previously paid. Roshni noted, “The cost of everything is so much lower, which was a shock to the system—in a good way!”
In addition to rent and utilities, transportation costs have also decreased dramatically. A 20-minute taxi ride costs them only £1.50, and they find takeaways priced between £1.50 and £2. Dining out is affordable as well, with meals in restaurants costing around £8, compared to over £60 in the UK.
Cultural Embrace and Future Plans
Both Roshni and Louis have transitioned to remote work, allowing them to retain their UK salaries while enjoying a lower cost of living. Roshni has become a full-time content creator, while Louis is working as an online fitness coach. Roshni highlighted the difference in lifestyle: “In the mornings, we can get lie-ins, go to the gym, have a swim, and then start work.”
The couple has immersed themselves in the local culture, frequently visiting stunning temples, elephant sanctuaries, and waterfalls. Roshni praised the local hospitality, saying, “Anyone will stop and help you if you need it.” This sense of community contrasts sharply with their experiences in the UK, where they felt increasingly isolated.
Despite having lived in Thailand for a relatively short time, Roshni and Louis have grown fond of their new home. Roshni expressed a desire to stay permanently, stating, “We’d be more open to starting a family here than in the UK because it’s so much safer.” Their experiences have led them to view Thailand as a place where they can thrive, both personally and professionally, and they cannot envision returning to their previous life in the UK.
As they adapt to their new surroundings, the couple continues to explore the opportunities that life in Thailand has to offer, cherishing both the financial benefits and the enriching cultural experiences.
