Congleton Passengers Demand Return of Sunday Train Service
Passengers in Congleton are rallying for the reinstatement of a Sunday train service that has been absent for over a year. The town, which has a population of approximately 30,000, has seen a significant disruption in its transport options, relying instead on rail replacement buses that can take twice as long for journeys between Stoke and Manchester.
The lack of a Sunday train service has prompted the Congleton Town Council to take action. Council members are urging the government, which oversees Northern Trains, to restore the service. Currently, residents can only utilize six rail replacement buses each Sunday, which is not meeting the needs of the community.
Mayor Robert Brittain has been vocal in his support for the campaign, stating, “The people of Congleton deserve a reliable Sunday train service. This is not just about convenience — it affects access to work, education, shopping, and leisure for thousands of residents.” His comments highlight the broader implications of the service disruption on daily life for many residents.
To amplify their voices, the town council has launched a petition that has garnered hundreds of signatures from supporters. The petition aims to put pressure on Northern Trains to commit to a full seven-day timetable.
In a community where an average of 25 passengers board each train at Congleton Station, the absence of a Sunday service is felt deeply. Residents who rely on public transport for various aspects of their lives are calling for immediate action to restore this essential service.
The push for reinstating the Sunday train service reflects a growing frustration among Congleton residents. Activists are hopeful that with continued support and pressure, their demands will be met, allowing for greater mobility and access for all.
As the council continues its efforts, it remains to be seen how Northern Trains will respond to the growing calls for change. For those interested in supporting the local cause, the petition is available for signatures online, further mobilizing community support for this critical issue.
