Daytime Vote Counting Set for 2026 Senedd Elections in Wales
Votes for the upcoming Senedd election in Wales will be counted during the daytime on May 8, 2026. The Electoral Management Board has directed Returning Officers to commence the counting process between 9:00 and 11:00 AM the day after the election. This decision continues the trend established in previous elections, including the 2021 Senedd election and subsequent local elections.
The shift to daytime counting aims to increase public engagement, allowing more individuals to follow the progress of vote tallies as they are announced. A daytime count also promotes better working conditions for election staff, ensuring they are well-rested and equipped with adequate resources to facilitate a secure and efficient counting process.
Guidelines for Vote Verification
While all counts must begin within the specified timeframe, the directive provides flexibility for some Returning Officers to verify ballot papers immediately after the polls close on May 7, at 10:00 PM. Verification involves counting the number of ballots to ensure it matches the number issued, although it does not involve tallying votes for candidates or parties. Some Returning Officers may opt to conduct verification overnight.
The Electoral Management Board, established in 2025 under the Elections and Elected Bodies (Wales) Act, plays a crucial role in coordinating devolved elections. The board issues legally binding instructions on various election-related matters, including ballot paper colors and the management of postal votes.
Response from Election Officials
Shereen Williams, Chief Executive of the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru, emphasized the importance of this decision. “Returning Officers and their teams are already working tirelessly to deliver a smooth and secure election on May 7,” she noted. “A daytime count helps to ensure that more people can watch the all-important counting of the votes.”
Williams further highlighted that the clarity provided by this directive will assist Returning Officers in effectively managing their election staff. She expressed gratitude to both the Returning Officers and the Electoral Commission for their constructive feedback during the development of these guidelines. The goal is to enhance public participation in what is a significant electoral event for Wales.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to transparency and accessibility in the electoral process, encouraging greater voter engagement and confidence in the democratic system.
