Highland Council Faces Objection to Pizzeria’s Modern Signage

A recently opened restaurant in the heart of Inverness, known as The Pizzeria, is facing scrutiny over its exterior signage. The restaurant, which commenced operations in August 2023 in the former Filling Station on Academy Street, has applied for retrospective planning permission from Highland Council. The establishment argues that the signage aims to “enhance overall brand presence” while claiming it fits well with the building’s architectural character and the surrounding streetscape.

The objection stems from the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, which has raised concerns regarding the signage’s design. According to the Society, the signage is “visually dominant and overly modern,” asserting that it lacks the modest scale and traditional detailing expected in a conservation area. The objection emphasizes that the design could undermine the historic significance of the building’s relationship with the adjacent Station Hotel. The Society warned that this shift could pivot the property towards the more contemporary architectural style of Falcon Square, which they believe should be avoided.

The Pizzeria, operated by Black Sheep Hotels, created 15 jobs when it opened its doors, marking a significant development in the area nearly two years after the closure of the American-themed diner, The Filling Station. The restaurant’s effort to establish itself has been met with both enthusiasm from patrons and concern from preservationists.

Highland Council is expected to make a decision regarding the signage in the coming weeks. The outcome of this review will not only impact The Pizzeria’s branding strategy but also set a precedent for future developments within the conservation area of Inverness. The balance between modern business practices and the preservation of historical integrity remains a critical point of discussion among local stakeholders and community members.
