MSP Edward Mountain Urges UK Government to Address Asylum Plan

Highland Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) Edward Mountain has urged the UK government to provide clarity regarding its unexpected plan to accommodate 300 male asylum seekers in Inverness. This proposal emerged earlier this week, catching both the Highland Council and the Scottish Government off guard and prompting widespread criticism from local politicians across various parties.

During a visit to the proposed site at Cameron Barracks, Mountain expressed concerns about the lack of communication from the Home Office. He emphasized the importance of a transparent dialogue between the government and local authorities. The response from parliamentarians has been largely negative, with members from the Conservative Party, Scottish National Party (SNP), Greens, and Liberal Democrats voicing their discontent over the handling of the situation.

The Conservative MSP plans to reach out to both the UK and Scottish governments early on October 10, 2023, after reviewing communications from his constituents. He intends to outline approximately ten specific requests, asking for a meeting with elected representatives, including Highland councillors, to discuss viable solutions to the asylum seeker issue.

“It is essential that the government comes here, talks to us, and explains what the real solution to the problem will be,” he asserted. Mountain’s call for action reflects a desire for collaborative engagement between local and national authorities as the community navigates the implications of this asylum seeker proposal.
