Prince Harry Declines US Citizenship After Five Years in California
Prince Harry has confirmed that he has no plans to pursue US citizenship, despite residing in California for over five years. During an appearance on comedian Hasan Minhaj‘s podcast, “Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know,” the Duke of Sussex made it clear that while he enjoys life in the United States with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, he prefers to maintain his British nationality.
His revelation addresses a long-standing question among royal watchers and the British public regarding whether his relocation to the US would lead him to abandon his ties to the United Kingdom. When Minhaj directly asked Harry about his citizenship intentions, he replied, “There are no plans to be, at this point.” This statement effectively ends years of speculation about his immigration status.
Harry has been living full-time in the US since stepping back from royal duties in 2020. The couple resides in an expansive mansion in Montecito, California, purchased for £11.8 million (approximately $14.65 million). Their two children, Archie, aged six, and Lilibet, aged four, hold dual citizenship by birth, as Meghan is American and Lilibet was born in the US.
While Harry has contemplated applying for citizenship, he has indicated that it was not a “high priority.” His decision suggests a commitment to his British roots, even as his children grow up in America.
Life in Montecito
The couple’s home life in Montecito is a stark contrast to their previous royal existence. Meghan has described their residence as a “safe haven” for their children. The couple reportedly fell in love with the property after spotting two palm trees in the garden, a symbol that resonated with Harry.
Meghan shared that their mornings are filled with music, and they practice a family tradition called “rose and thorn,” where each member shares one highlight and one challenge from their day. She noted that Lilibet has embraced this practice, often exclaiming, “My day was a blast!”
In terms of hospitality, Meghan has adopted a relaxed approach. She prefers to host guests barefoot and often greets them wearing an apron to create a comfortable atmosphere. Instead of traditional British tea, the couple serves hot cider or warm toddies, inviting visitors to help themselves.
Their efforts to cultivate a welcoming environment underscore a desire to step away from the formality typically associated with royal life. As Prince Harry continues to navigate his dual existence between the UK and the US, his decision not to apply for citizenship reflects a complex balancing act between personal identity and public expectations.
In conclusion, while Harry enjoys the privileges of his life in California, he remains steadfast in his allegiance to the UK, a choice that highlights his commitment to his heritage even as he embraces a new chapter with his family across the Atlantic.
