Scottish Greens Declare End to Internal Strife, Focus on Unity

The Scottish Greens have announced the conclusion of internal conflicts that have characterized recent years. Co-leader Ross Greer confirmed that what some referred to as a “civil war” within the party has come to an end. He described the turmoil as stemming from a “very, very small” faction of around 12 to 15 members who attempted to create discord.

In an interview with the PA news agency, Greer stated, “That is over now, in so far as there ever was one. I think we have firmly drawn a line under that.” His remarks follow recent media coverage highlighting a “Glasgow faction” of radical activists within the party who have voiced criticism of the leadership.

At the party’s conference in April, Greer’s predecessor, Patrick Harvie, addressed the issue, noting that a “small minority of members have taken to anonymous leaks, smears, insults.” Harvie emphasized that such actions were damaging both to the party’s reputation and to the collaborative efforts of its members.

Now, Greer observes a shift in the party’s dynamics. By the time of the upcoming autumn conference, he indicated that members engaged in “respectful debates.” He noted a “100% reduction in anonymous Green source stories” recently, suggesting a move towards more transparent communication. “I am the first to admit the last couple of years have been really difficult for us. I am also absolutely confident that period is over now,” he remarked.

The recent challenges faced by the Scottish Greens underscore the importance of unity as they prepare for the upcoming elections. Greer highlighted the need for collective action against the rising popularity of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. He noted that the prospect of Reform potentially securing a significant number of Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) has become a unifying factor for the Greens.

“For every seat that we win, for every MSP the Greens elect, we are depriving Reform of the opportunity to get someone else elected,” Greer stated. He emphasized the urgency of standing against what he described as “hateful and nasty politics,” particularly in light of the elections scheduled for May 2024.

Greer expressed that the stakes have never been higher, urging members to act as one. “Taking on and defeating the really hateful politics that are going to arrive in this Parliament come May is unbelievably important for the future of this country,” he said.

Since assuming leadership in August 2023 alongside Gillian Mackay, Greer has noted a surge in grassroots activities. He reported a “massive increase in on-the-ground activity from our branches across the country,” with members actively engaging communities. The party has now surpassed 9,000 members across Scotland, and Greer indicated that polling and membership levels are rising, reflecting a growing enthusiasm among supporters.

The Scottish Greens are now positioned to move forward, focusing on enhancing their visibility and influence in the political landscape, as they prepare for the critical challenges ahead.
