Trump Claims Renewed Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia
US President Donald Trump announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire following recent violent clashes along their border. The fighting, which reignited a long-standing territorial dispute, has raised concerns about regional stability. Despite Trump’s optimistic statement, officials from both countries have indicated that significant challenges remain in implementing the truce.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump reported positive discussions with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. He stated, “They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening,” and referenced a peace accord facilitated by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Trump emphasized the importance of restoring peace and fostering trade relations with the United States.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs challenged Trump’s claim, asserting that no formal agreement for a ceasefire was reached. Thai military spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri confirmed that clashes were ongoing, with Cambodia’s defense ministry reporting that Thai forces conducted strikes early on the same day. These developments highlight the complexities of the situation, with both sides appearing to have differing interpretations of events.
The recent violence was reportedly triggered by a roadside bomb incident that resulted in the deaths of several Thai soldiers. Trump characterized the explosion as an unfortunate accident, leading to Thailand’s strong response. However, Anutin firmly rejected this characterization, stating on Facebook, “It’s definitely not a roadside accident.” He emphasized that Thailand would continue military actions until it no longer perceived a threat from Cambodia.
Anutin reiterated to Trump that Thailand’s position remains firm: military operations will persist until Cambodia withdraws its forces and removes landmines from the border area. He urged Trump to encourage Cambodia to take concrete steps towards peace, including halting fire and de-escalating tensions.
Despite conflicting reports, Trump maintained that progress had been made, insisting that both nations are ready for peace. He hinted that US trade interests might have played a role in the discussions, stating, “Both Countries are ready for PEACE and continued Trade with the United States of America.”
The situation at the border remains volatile, and the success of the renewed ceasefire appears contingent on further negotiations and actions from both governments. As the international community watches closely, the potential for renewed hostilities continues to loom, underscoring the delicate balance of peace in the region.
