Afan Latic Wins the 2023 Zaim Azemovic Award for Literature
Afan Latic has been awarded the prestigious Zaim Azemovic Award for 2023, presented by the Center for Culture in Rozaje. Latic received this recognition for his collection of short stories titled “Pod oštrim uglom,” published by Fokalizator from Podgorica.
The award is a significant accolade in the Montenegrin literary scene and recognizes outstanding contributions to literature. According to Dr. Melida Travancic, a Bosnian-Herzegovinian writer and critic, Latic’s work effectively connects the past and present while hinting at future possibilities. She remarked, “With the book of stories ‘Pod oštrim uglom,’ we perceive the world around us and within us through different lenses, exploring and reflecting on reality in new ways.”
Background and Education
Born in Berane in 1983, Latic completed his primary education at Hajro Shahmanovic School in Plav. He then enrolled in Gazi Husrev-beg Medresa in Sarajevo, furthering his studies in oriental philology with a focus on Arabic and Turkish language and literature. After finishing his studies, Latic returned to Montenegro, where he began teaching Arabic at the Mehmed Fatih Medresa in Podgorica.
In addition to teaching, Latic is also engaged in translation work from Arabic and has developed a passion for writing poetry and prose. His diverse educational background and experiences contribute to the richness of his storytelling, as evidenced in his award-winning collection.
