Ajax Match Abandoned After Fireworks Erupt in Stands
Ajax’s Eredivisie match against Groningen was abruptly abandoned after supporters ignited fireworks and flares in the stands at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The incident occurred just five minutes into the match, prompting referee Bas Nijhuis to lead the players off the pitch. An attempt to resume play was met with further disturbances, forcing officials to formally abandon the game.
The match is now scheduled to be played behind closed doors on December 2, 2023, at 14:30. Ajax confirmed via social media that the game, which was still scoreless at the time of interruption, will be resumed on the new date.
In response to the incident, Ajax expressed strong condemnation. “Ajax finds it downright scandalous what happened in the stadium tonight,” the club stated in a tweet. They also apologized to anyone affected, emphasizing that the safety of spectators and players had been compromised, which they deemed unacceptable.
The club reported that stringent measures were in place to prevent such occurrences. Spectators in the affected section were searched, and dogs were deployed to detect fireworks both before the stadium opened and at the entry points. Despite these precautions, the situation escalated, leading to the abandonment of the match.
Ajax has committed to investigating the incident further. “We will study the camera footage to try to identify the perpetrators and explore other avenues to ascertain responsibility,” the club added. They stated that appropriate measures would be taken if any individuals are identified.
This disruption not only impacts the teams involved but also raises questions about safety protocols at sporting events. As the investigation unfolds, Ajax aims to ensure a safer environment for all attendees in the future.
