Burnley Eyes Norwich Striker Josh Sargent in January Bid
Burnley is preparing to renew its interest in Norwich City striker Josh Sargent as the Canaries struggle in the Championship. Currently sitting 23rd in the league after losing 10 of their first 15 matches, Norwich’s disappointing start to the season has raised concerns about their survival. The only team below them is Sheffield Wednesday, who face a 12-point deduction due to financial administration issues. Without this penalty, Norwich would be just one point off the bottom of the league.
Following a recent home defeat to Leicester City, Norwich parted ways with manager Liam Manning. This leadership change adds another layer of uncertainty for the club, who had aimed to challenge for promotion after consistently competing in the Premier League throughout the 2010s. The departure of Manning may lead to further shifts within the squad, including potential transfer activity involving Sargent.
Burnley made an attempt to acquire Sargent during the summer of 2025, reportedly offering £1.5 million up front with additional performance-related bonuses bringing the total deal to approximately £10 million. This proposal was declined by Norwich, but according to journalist Alan Nixon via Patreon, Burnley is keen to revisit the possibility of signing the 25-year-old in the upcoming January transfer window.
The club aims to bolster its attacking options to aid in their fight against relegation while operating under financial constraints. A deal that includes bonuses based on Sargent’s achievements could be appealing to Burnley. Heading into the current season, Sargent had netted 31 goals in his last 62 Championship appearances and started strong with five goals in the first four matches. However, he has not scored since late August, a decline attributed to Norwich’s overall poor form.
Despite recent struggles, losing Sargent could prove detrimental to Norwich’s survival hopes. He remains their most potent attacking threat and may thrive under new management at Carrow Road. His proven Championship capabilities position him as one of the division’s top forwards when in form. Interest from clubs in the Premier League and Bundesliga underscores his value in the market, making it crucial for Norwich to retain his services through the remainder of the season.
Failure to do so could frustrate fans and heighten the risk of relegation to League One, a situation that many supporters wish to avoid. The upcoming January transfer window will be pivotal for both Burnley and Norwich as they navigate their respective challenges in the Championship.
